The collaboration between Etlia and Fennia in modernizing data warehousing is the result of long-term and goal-oriented development work.
In recent years, Fennia has invested in building a centralized data warehouse as part of a broader digital transformation initiative. The objective is to transition from fragmented information systems to a unified data solution that enables efficient analytics, process automation, and improved business decision-making. Etlia’s experts have played a key role in the development work, bringing strong expertise in both data warehousing and business needs.
At the beginning of the project, operations were guided by a reactive backlog model, where business needs were prioritized without a comprehensive plan. As the number of tasks grew, the team had to be scaled, and data management development became a critical goal. Juha Järvi, Fennia’s Data Lead, was tasked with building a new operating model, shifting from backlog management to data warehouse development and remapping all data sources. Information can now be retrieved centrally from one location without separate ad hoc queries, saving resources.
“Data warehousing projects are intensive in the initial phase, and at Fennia, the need to increase the number of data engineers as projects progress has been recognized. Etlia has responded to this need by quickly providing skilled professionals who can be smoothly integrated without extensive onboarding. Etlia’s holistic approach supports Fennia’s vision of data and business management, and Etlia’s experienced data engineers add value by understanding the big picture of projects and working systematically.”
Clear goals for data warehouse development
The development of the data warehouse has clear goals: it must provide a single source of truth for key figures, identify data quality deficiencies, and ensure that data is available at the right time and place. Understanding of data quality has significantly improved, and as the project progresses, benefits related to customer experience and business processes have started to materialize. The data warehouse also supports targeted marketing and pricing automation, enhancing operational efficiency.
“The requirements are very high. Etlia has positioned itself as a partner whose experts can both develop data warehouses and grasp the big picture. This allowed discussions to start at a higher level instead of focusing on details that might lead to fragmented solutions and, at worst, increase ETL work.”
